Project title
Movement in the earliest vertebrates: evaluating the hydrodynamics and swimming mechanics of Sacabambaspis
Description of the project
In this project, we aim to explore the locomotion of the earliest vertebrates, via the iconic Ordovician Sacabambaspis. 3D reconstructions will be built digitally based on CT-scans performed at the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle. The models will be used to explore the hydrodynamics of Sacabambaspis- incorporating flow dynamics, thrust generation and stabilizing mechanics - through both computational fluid dynamics and physical flume experiments. Surface textural data acquired though CT-scanning will be incorporated into the models, and potentially investigated in isolation.
