Project title
Form and function of fossil coelacanths
Description of the project
Contrary to extant coelacanths which are deep water specialists, fossil forms were much more diverse in their ecology and morphology. However, well-preserved material from these shallow water fossil forms is often rare and few studies have tried to do ecomorphological studies on this material trying to link form to function. Here we propose to scan unique material from the Las Hoyas Konservat-Lagerstätte to 1) quantify the form of the cranial elements in 3D using geometric morphometric approaches, and 2) use biomechanical models to better understand the feeding ecology of these shallow water forms.
