- Partitioning of Xe upon crust melting at depths
- Descriptif du projet
- Xe is a key tracer in planetary processes. Compared to other noble gases, Xe is missing from the Earth’s and Mars’ atmosphere, known as the ‘missing Xe paradox’. Besides, Xe shows a depletion in light isotopes for the atmosphere of Earth and Mars. Now studies support Xe may be retained within the quartz and olivine crystal structures under high P-T conditions. To better understand this anomaly, in situ experiment for Xe partitioning between plagioclase mineral and melt have been carried out using a multi-anvil press with x-ray synchrotron EDX analyses in Petra III, P61 (Hamburg) up to 1000 ºC and 2.5 GPa. During experiment, we got pure melt phase but mixed melt/crystal zones at conditions by measuring different areas. In order to obtain the melt/crystal Xe partition coefficient, we now need to measure the volume proportion of crystals and melt in the mixed zones. The aim here is to analyze quenched samples with x-ray tomography technique to get the exact 3D mapping. Combined the in-situ experiments results and recovered sample analysis will finally help us to propose a scenario to quantify Xe cycle between external and internal terrestrial reservoirs.
