- Project title
- Evolutionary morpohlogy of acoustic apparatus in mochokid catfishes
- Description of the project
- The project aims to explore the morphological diversification of the Elastic Spring Apparatus (ESA) which allows the production of acoustic and/or electric signals in mochokids. The ESA is simple and composed of two structures: a bone with a distal plate that contacts the swimbladder and a muscle that moves the plate. However, it shows huge differences in shape, size, and function in the handful of species investigated to date. My project has two main objectives: 1) To quantify the morphological diversity of the Elastic Spring Apparatus in mochokid catfish. 2) To test various hypotheses concerning the evolution of acoustic and electric communication in mochokids. The results will provide us with a rare insight into the ‘evolution in progress’ from one communication channel to another.
