- Titre du projet
- CT-scanning of hominoid skulls to determine ontogenetic, functional and phylogenetic contraints in the masticatory apparatus.
- Descriptif du projet
- The proposed project focuses on species differences in morphology and ontogeny with the ultimate aim to shed light on the processes that led to the evolution of modern human life histories and morphologies. It forms part of the Synthesys award FR-TAF3890 that extends an ongoing project (CGL2010-20868). Developmental changes in internal structures, e.g. tooth germs and eruption status of teeth, cortical bone thickness, trabecular bundle orientation etc. will be analysed viz-a-viz changes in outer morphology. Shape analyses, in particular, will draw on the expertise of our collaborator at the MNHN, Dr. Martin Friess. The material sampled at the MNHM will be used to analyse ontogenetic changes in the temporo-mandibular joint as a result of changes in loading conditions of the mandible, inferred from internal structures and bone density.
