- Titre du projet
- CT-scanning of the vertebral column and thorax of the Regourdou 1 Neandertal individual
- Descriptif du projet
- This project aims to micro-CT scan all the elements of the vertebral column (VC) and thorax (TH) of the Regourdou 1 (R1) Neandertal as a necessary step to further investigate the anatomy and paleobiology of the Neandertal vertebral column and thorax. The recent reassessment of the faunal remains from level IV from the site of Regourdou, curated at the Musée National de Prehistoire (MNP, Les Eyzies, France), in which R1 was found has yielded significant new fossil human fossil remains that further complete the VC and TH of this individual, currently curated at the Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie du Perigord (MAAP, Périgueux, France). R1 has one of the most complete VC and TH of any Neandertal. Only Kebara 2 is more complete while Shanidar 3, La Chapelle-aux-Saints and Tabun C1 are comparable to R1. Moreover, this individual does not suffer the taphonomic deformation nor the pathological conditions of the other Neandertal specimens mentioned above.
