Evolutionary Anatomy of the Hominin Ear Ossicles and the Evolution of Hominin Hearing
Descriptif du projet
Our research team is investigating the evolution of hearing in the human lineage. We have already published some results of this research line in the middle Pleistocene humans from the Sima de los Huesos in Spain. The Sima de los Huesos humans show a hearing pattern that is very similar to modern humans. The Neandertals are the evolutionary descendants of the Sima de los Huesos hominins, and we now want to extend our analysis to Neandertals to study their hearing pattern as well. We believe our results represent a new approach to the evolution of language. We would like to CT scan several adult Neandertal temporal bones and study the La Ferrassie 3 ear ossicles to reconstruct the hearing pattern in Neandertals. Study of the ear bones relies mainly on digital photographs for the taking of metric data. In addition, the La Ferrassie 3 ear ossicles have been published only briefly previously, and we want to perform a more detailed comparative metric and morphological study of these Neandertal ear bones.
