Project title
Widmanstatten figures characterisation in an iron meteorite, Toluca
Description of the project
Widmanstätten patterns (see pictures attached) are graphic patterns revealed on most iron meteorites after nitric acid etching. They are intergrowths of two iron-nickel alloys: kamacite (low in nickel) and taenite (rich in nickel). Kamacite lamellae bear witness to the cooling process of iron meteorites, which are remnants of the core of differentiated asteroids. We wish to assess whether X-ray tomography can discriminate the two alloys and thus offer a 3D view of Widmanstätten patterns.
