Titre du projet
Study of the cranial anatomy and dental morphology of Pyrotherium
Descriptif du projet
This scientific project is part of my Ph.D. Thesis titled "Systematics, biostratigraphy, and evolution of the Pyrotheriidae (Pyrotheria, Mammalia) of South America", which I have been carrying out for the past three years under the supervision of Drs. Bárbara Vera (CIEMEP-CONICET) and Alejo Scarano (MLP-CONICET) at the Centro de Investigaciones de Montaña y Estepa Patagónica (CIEMEP-CONICET), Esquel (Chubut Province, Argentina). One of the best-known representative of this group is Pyrotherium, the guide taxon for the Deseadan SALMA (Late Oligocene). The objective of the project is to study the cranial anatomy and dental morphology of five specimens of Pyrotherium (MNHN-F-DES 100, 1238, 1239, 1240, 1243) that belong to the Deseado collection at the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle of Paris (France). Most of these specimens were originally described and figured by Gaudry (1909), and later by other researchers (Billet, 2010; Koenigswald, 2015). The study of these specimens will allow me to visualize and analyze anatomical and dental morphological characteristics and compare them with the type specimens and other materials of reference. Furthermore, with this information I be able to complete the data matrix and define character states to carry out phylogenetic analyses and further paleoecological interpretations.
